Comparison
Bonfiyah vs Otter: an honest comparison.
Both apps record and transcribe conversations. The differences come down to three things: what they do beyond transcription, how they handle privacy, and what they cost.
The short version
If you mostly record Zoom / Teams / Meet calls and want a mature meeting bot — stay with Otter. Their OtterPilot bot is the most-installed in the category, and the April 2026 "Conversational Knowledge Engine" repositioning brought MCP server support so ChatGPT and Claude can pull meeting history as context for downstream work.
If you record any in-person conversations — Bonfiyah is materially better. We're Apple-native; Otter is browser-and-bot-first, and the Otter Desktop app launched 2026 still routes audio through their cloud.
If privacy or attorney-client work matter to you — Bonfiyah is the only Apple-native recorder with structured three-status consent (Granted · Unknown · Internal Use Only) and explicit Attorney-Client OR Doctor-Patient Privilege markings (per-speaker + per-story, audit-logged, carries through to PDF + email). Otter has no equivalent, and a 2025 California class-action lawsuit (NPR coverage, Aug 15 2025) alleges OtterPilot recorded participants without two-party consent and trained models on guest audio.
If you want AI features that go beyond per-meeting summaries — Bonfiyah's Pro AI tier ($24.99/mo intro → $34.99/mo) ships eighteen cross-recording surfaces: Daily Brief, Bonfire Pulse, Founder Insights, Promise Tracker, Truth Layer, Pre-Brief, Project Context, Compatibility, Team Dynamics, MBTI Compatibility, Pointillist Painting, Mach-IV, Story Mode, People Memory, Speaker Themes, Project Actions, and Proactive Notifications. Otter ships AI Chat with MCP connectors and Cross-Meeting Intelligence, but it's a different category — Otter is "search across all your meetings," Bonfiyah is "reason about what's true and what people owe each other across all your meetings."
If you want the cheapest unlimited option — Bonfiyah Pro ($14.99/mo intro → $24.99/mo) is unlimited capture vs Otter Pro at $16.99/mo capped at 1,200 min/mo. At ~40 hrs of recording per month you'll hit the Otter cap and pay overages.

The privacy difference
Otter has built a meeting-recording empire on a particular default behavior: when you join a Zoom or Teams call with Otter connected, Otter sends "Otter Assistant" — a bot — to that meeting. The bot announces itself, but doesn't ask permission. After the meeting, Otter automatically emails everyone in attendance with a link to the transcript.
For some users, this is a feature. For many — including most attorneys, journalists, and executives I've spoken with — this is the reason they uninstalled.
In August 2025, NPR reported on a California class-action lawsuit alleging that OtterPilot recorded participants without two-party consent and that guest audio was used to train Otter's AI models. Whether the suit succeeds or settles, the underlying behavior is documented in Otter's own privacy policy: they "train our proprietary artificial intelligence technology on de-identified audio recordings" by default.
Bonfiyah was built explicitly to take the opposite position:
- No meeting bots, ever. If you record a virtual meeting, Bonfiyah captures it via Mac Catalyst's screen broadcast — the bot would have to be invited by you, deliberately. There is no automatic join.
- No emails to participants without your action. Sharing a transcript or summary requires your explicit tap.
- Built-in two-party consent management with Attorney-Client OR Doctor-Patient Privilege markings. Twelve US states require all parties to consent before a recording. Bonfiyah surfaces three speaker statuses (Granted, Unknown, Internal Use Only) at record-time, captures verbal consent on the recording itself, sends consent-request SMS on your behalf, and ships explicit Attorney-Client Privilege marking — per-speaker or per-story, audit-logged, with chain-of-custody hash, and a red 🔒 ATTORNEY-CLIENT PRIVILEGE banner that carries through to every email summary, PDF export, and SMS share. - First-launch acceptance gate (v3.0.144). Three required tick-boxes — Terms, Privacy, Biometric & Voice Consent — and an Accept-and-Continue button that's disabled until all three are checked. Each acceptance is stamped with IP, user-agent, IDFV, CloudKit user id, app + iOS version, and a tamper-evident SHA-256 hash for the legal record. Existing users are re-gated on every required-version bump.
- No AI training on your conversations. Binding privacy commitment. We do not, and will not, fine-tune any model on your transcripts.
- You own the audio — we don't. Once we have the transcript, the raw audio is permanently deleted from our servers within 24 hours. After that, your audio lives only in your iCloud Drive (your Apple ID, your iCloud+ quota, your custody) — Bonfiyah cannot produce audio under subpoena because Bonfiyah doesn't have it.
This is not a marketing posture. It's the reason the app exists.
What Pro AI gives you that Otter doesn't
Otter ships AI Chat with MCP connectors and Cross-Meeting Intelligence — strong "search your meetings" features. Pro AI is a different category: cross-recording reasoning, not search.
Promise Tracker
Bonfiyah extracts every commitment made in every meeting and tracks them to completion. "I'll send the report by Friday" becomes a tracked promise tied to the speaker, the meeting, and the deadline.
Truth Layer
Cross-references statements across your entire recording library. Flags contradictions with confidence scoring. Catches "wait, didn't you say last week..." moments before they become problems.
Pre-Brief Notifications
30 minutes before a calendar meeting, Bonfiyah surfaces what was said in your last conversation with the same people. Walk into every meeting fully prepped.
People Memory
Builds a relationship profile for every recurring contact: their commitments, priorities, communication style, and how reliably they keep their promises.
Team Dynamics
9-box matrix across selected speakers, MBTI Compatibility heatmap, Pointillist Painting (Ray Dalio-inspired 10-facet scorecard per teammate). For believability-weighted decisions, not search.
Story Mode
Narrative recap that reads like someone was paying attention — order of disclosures, hesitation moments, what was emphasized vs. downplayed. Plus episodic groupings of recurring topics.
Proactive Notifications
Quote-driven pings for overdue promises, fresh contradictions, cooling topics — three tiers, daily caps, quiet hours respected. Local-only — no APNs payload, no third-party push servers.

Switching from Otter (5-minute guide)
- 1. Export your Otter transcripts. Otter Settings → Export → choose.txt or.docx. You don't lose your historical record.
- 2. Disable Otter Assistant on Zoom/Teams. If you've enabled the bot to auto-join, turn it off in Otter Settings → Integrations. This stops new transcripts from being created in Otter.
- 3. Install Bonfiyah from the App Store. Bonfiyah for iPhone, iPad, Mac. Free to start.
- 4. Import your speakers. Bonfiyah pulls from your iPhone Contacts. Recordings going forward will identify those speakers automatically across every conversation.
- 5. Try Pro AI free for 7 days. The Pro AI features are the reason most Otter switchers stay. After the trial, decide whether you want the full AI suite or the simpler Pro tier.
